Why do we watch films? And why do they look so real? Why are the movements fluid? If I should walk into the projector room and fiddle around with the speed of the film, you will be able to tell if its going faster or slower.
It seems that our eyes are, for some reason, most comfortable with a twenty-four frames per second motion picture. Look away from your monitor and see the speaker on the right. When your eyes make this shift, did you see the part between the monitor and the speaker? Was it a blur? When pictures move across your field of vision, 24 of them each second, it is a movie. Reality then, is anything at 24 frames per second!
Now, is it possible that one can consciously try to slow it down? Try it, but don’t blame me if it makes everything seem different, because it does. I tried this at a bus-stop, I could actually catch a person blink without really staring hard in anticipation. I pursued this with great intrigue, but something made me realize that continuous indulgence in this might slow down reaction, and possibly all body-processes. Now where did this thought come from? My mind was busy doing something and along pops this little flake of rational intelligence. It cannot be the mind. This was the brain.
Now then what is the mind? Its a graphical user interface between the brain and the self, something of an operating system. Let’s face it, we cannot interpret electric and chemical signals of each of our cells and tissues and organs directly. That is the job of the brain to do. The mind responds much later, about a fiftieth of a second later. The brain cannot be controlled, while the mind is well within our control. Messages can be sent to the brain through the mind in the form of thought(ref. Quantum Healing by Deepak Chopra).
How the mind came to be is another baffler. It isn’t something material that is connected to the brain, it appears that it is a creation of the brain itself, an illusion of sorts. There is no such thing as a mind. The mind is a balloon with the rubber skin off. This operating system is also very volatile. It can be manipulated by anything and anyone and even hang at times(like in the case of people in coma and most politicians). And the beautiful part of this is that you can choose when you wish to change, or be manipulated, the brain assists with all the rationale needed, if you are smart that is.
Then what is mind over matter? Its a distraction of the brain by the mind/thought. A lot of pending work that you are busy doing will make you forget about bladder pressure. The same thing, but consciously done is mind over matter. But consciously trying to contain some body-processes can have adverse effects. Overcoming pain this way however, doesn’t.
At this point, I have writers’ block; can go on no further. Perhaps add to this some other time.
